Well we shouldn't rely on a commercial venture to supply something
essential.

I think point 4 would be taken card of by point 1.

I guess the problem here is the old packaging program. Which has so far been
left to
the distros and I think I can safely say its a mess. I did down load the aol
IM client, the real one
from aol and it had an installer. It even asked me the if I wanted menu
entries added for KDE and/or
Gnome. It was very nice and polished.

There are many times when a problem is consider not in the scope of KDE. And
frankly to the end
user doesn't care, its a real problem. So the question is, is there any
thing that KDE could do that
would help the problem and not create yet another way to install software?

Would it be possible to create an installation library/program that would
understand all the major
distro's packaging systems. The development team would use this to create a
single file
that is downloaded and would install on RH, Mandrake, debian etc... by
creating the rpm or
apt file whatever and do all the needed work. of updated menus and placing
shortcuts on the
desktop etc. Uninstalling would still work through normal method although we
could have a KDE
app that wraps the uninstall process as well.

You should take a look at www.lindows.com <http://www.lindows.com> KDE the
easy way :)

 Hi Folks,

pleas excuse my english, its not the best.

I have a four-point suggestion on how to make Linux the ultimate
Win-killerapp. I based my suggestions on "What makes me Stop using Windows,
and start using Linux?" (Definately, if i imagine the use of these following
points on my knoppix, it would be incredible)

So here we go, Please give me thirty seconds.

I. Setup routine

I am missing an Installer. When I downloaded an application to my KDE
Desktop, I want to click on a Setup-Icon, wich does the rest for me. End :)

II. Linux Web update

Why getupdate? Why Serverlists and Console-Typing? I like the
windowsupdate.com site. Please make me one for Linux.

III. Automatic Wine

When I downloaded a Windows app on my KDE Desktop and try to start it, this
should happen:

A graphical Window, that first say: "You are trying to start a Windows
application under a Linux OS. This may occure problems. try anyway Y/N?"
Then Wine should make the rest for me automatically in the background, or in
a new window.

IV. oh yes - i like shortcuts and Program Folder entries for every new
installed program.

Thank you,

xtraa
