there's already work on a metainfo sidebar plugin, which share your sentiments 
in that it will be very cool.. the authors hoped to have it for 3.1 even, but 
fell behind due to taking care of other metainfo things that came up... =/

as for also using it for help with views, refer to my previous email on using 
the sidebar space for this to which i'd only add that a metafile tab in the 
sidebar will be easily turned off, which is something we don't want. 

the context information "you are only viewing, click here to edit" is 
orthogonal to "this is the metainfo for the file" and i'd hate to make people 
choose between having both or neither =/
