this was my first thought, as well.. but i dismissed it because:

o with two views in the sidebar, there isn't enough room for most windows.
try it out by enabling multiple views in the sidebar. but if we dedicate the
sidebar to this, then we lose the other functionality of it. not a good trade
off IMO

o this is per-view. the sidebar is per-window. a window can have more than
one view, so the sidebar won't give the user much of a cue compared to an
in-view sidebar. in fact, there are several items that need to be
persistently visible in the views, for which the sidebar would fail
miserably.

a nirvana-like situation might be:

when a view is not the active one, there is a "minimized" bar that shows basic
info like the path, link status, etc.. much like the current view statusbar.

when a view is activated, this "zooms out" to be larger with context-specific
actions. this visual change would allow us to keep it smallish but very
noticeable and give excellent feedback when you switch views.

interfaces aren't 2-D snapshots, they are 3D where the 3rd dimension is time.
we so rarely ever use that 3rd dimension =)
