the trouble was with people finding where things are and differentiating 
between what is a control panel and what is a "Category" ... basically i 
provided a mock-up of a kcontrol icon view and had people "navigate" it. they 
seemed to have a harder time finding individual modules vs the tree... =/

i think when i get around to writing code for this it'll be time to get 
creative... because keeping the tree will leave us with new problems, 
especially on 800x600 screens...
