I think it's more that the average user, without being taught what it is, 
wouldn't be able to figure it out.

The buttons don't have labels (what sort of label would you put on that?) and 
don't have icons.  When I first looked at your picture, I couldn't find the 
widget, and I wondered why there were these really ugly looking things in the 
filename (I couldn't even tell they were buttons).

There are a few aspects of UI that we must consider: one is the speed and 
efficiency of the GUI for the user (Fitt's Law talks about this).  The other 
one is the intuitiveness (good icons, good labels, familiar layouts).  While 
your feature is fast, I don't think most average users would figure out what 
it's used for unless told.
