I think this thread is getting a bit side tracked with the
app centric vs document centric. Even if the K-menu is
document centric you have to find it first. This means distinguishing
it from the other icons on the task bar.

The problems:
1) The Icon for the K menu has nothing that distinguishes it
from other icons on the panel.

2) Most icons on the panel launch an app this discourages timid
users for clicking around to browse the content.

Solutions proposed so far:

1) Have the K-menu start poped up, either every time or the first
few time

2) Have a startup tip. Preferable the first tip.

3) Add some graphical clue that this icon is different. This could
be a black outline. Four arrows in that surround the icon and point
to it. Adding a word to it (anything but start) like Launch.

4) Add a tooltip.

I think there is no doubt that 2 should be implemented but I think we
also need some variant of #3. Not every first time user will be going
through the login process. Take my wife borring my computer or say
a kiosk or library. Where it will probably be left logged in and
waiting to for someone to walk up.

As for #4 Newbies probably won't find the tooltips.

The Really like adding a word to the menu since everything else
in the menu is just icons it would really make it stand out. Sort
of the opposite of apple where it was the only icon based menu. The
only probablem as someone pointed out is that it looks bad on larger
icon and vertical panels. I think we could just have it on horizontal
panels as that is the default, anyone who changes to the vertical panel
probably doesn't need it anyway.
