What makes you say it's buggy? It works, and does so nicely. 

As for it's usefulness: it provides a convenient way to display information to 
the user. 

Instead of placing file information in the statusbar (fairly out of sight) or 
an extra column (which makes the list view far more complex by displaying 
info of all the files instead of the few files the user wants to know the 
size of and then using a format of 'xx,xxx KB' to add to the confusion).
