I went and devoted some voting points to this one. I've got a Logitech Marble
F/X with 4 buttons. Under MS-Win I used to have button 4 configured to allow
the trackball to scroll a page. Button 3 was assigned to click-and-hold
which is a fantastic feature for doing graphics editing.

The Windows drivers from Logitech allowed for all kinds of stuff to be
assigned to the mouse buttons. Seeing as how there are a number of mice and
trakballs out there with more than 3 buttons, this could apply to a wide
range of devices.
