Excellent suggestion, I didn't know that was possible. Any comments on the 
usability impact of disabling previews?

I disagree with this change under the pretense of space saving. The "font" 
that the LCD clock uses is much more condensed than what the plain clock 
typically uses. You might be able to convince me to use a plain clock by 
default on the basis of readability and consistancy; however, that is not the 
focus of this discussion.

With these changes, a good 1/3rd of Kicker is usable for the taskbar at 
800x600.

As Neil has aptly pointed out, Kicker's current behaviour at 800x600 is both 
unacceptable and unreleasable. If there are no substantial objections, I'm 
looking at commitng modifications #1, #2, #3, and #4 tommorow night, and 
possibly #6 pending further discussion.
