when the line-up direction changes, the icons get reordered  anyhow, and 
after experimenting with it a bit doing so following the last sorted order 
seems to be the least jarring (and in line with previous versions AFAICT?)

tried this, but then people want to line them up again after having lined them 
up, moved them manually (or added an icon) ...
