first off, "ugly" is pretty subjective (outside of some pretty restrictive
parametres). and the reasons for suggesting a 2 desktop pager are:

o the vast majority of new users i've polled online and offline don't have a
handle on the multiple desktop thing. they chafe at it and it takes time to
get used to it. in real life situations i've found that four is overwhelming
for the new user. 2 is much more manageable (left/right, top/bottom,
this/that .. people handle boolean issues quite well). as they become more
comfortable with the multiple desktop issue they can increase the number.
(speaking of which, 4 isn't enough either. i use 6. and i quite like the way
the pager looks with 6, and that's a product of conditioning)

o it saves space, which is quite noticeable at 800x600. remember that one of
the big complaints w/kicker's default is that it is crowded. having a bnch of
desktops that many don't use doesn't help.

anyways, i'm not really committed to any of the suggestions thus far, i just
wanted to point out the counterballancing points.

and so the top two are harder to get at? as opposed to a two desktop pager
where only one is on the bottom? i mean, you could say there are twice as
many desktops that are easy to get at in the 4 desktop set up or your could
say that there are twice as many that are hard to get at ;-) i really don't
know if this matters much.
