i don't know, i'm not familiar enough w/illustrator. but assuming that it is 
indeed the best way for illustrator, we are talking about the general desktop 
not a certain type of _application_ (in this case a vector graphics app). 
this includes the file manager, the desktop, the panels, the basic/common UI 
elements found throughout (e.g. listviews)

i would suggest that those who are having trouble grasping the problems 
w/double clicking read the excerpt i posted from "the humane interface". it 
goes over the topic quite thoroughly and explains exactly why it is a bad 
design for usability.
