Correct, which is definitely... odd. The reason behind this oddness is 
in points (a) and (b) of my previous email.

From this I assume you intend the SMTP server settings to be entirely 
local to kscd? The reason I state this is that previously the SMTP port 
was hard-coded and the SMTP server was a "global" setting (albeit a 
global setting that could not be configured in the KDE Control Centre).

Making the SMTP server setting entirely local to kscd simplifies things 
a great deal - I think this would be a good idea. I'll work on a patch 
and post it tomorrow.

I've learnt a lot already. I appreciate your time spent considering 
this. And I look forward to not having to rely on any global settings 
in my configuration of kscd :)
