Right, this is how windows used to do it as well, so we shouldnt be too 
ashamed :)

I do think this is one of the serious shortcomings of X though. As far 
as i understand the real problem is that it doesnt support resizing of 
the root window. So while you can change the resolution by using some 
of the extensions, you cant change the size of the root window/desktop 
or the color depth.

But yes, i seriously think that basic hardware config directly from 
kconfig would be a huge gain. Even if it couldnt be done platform 
independantly, it could either be compiled only on supported systems, 
or be in system specific modules.

I of course know that it is generally considered to be the job of the 
linux/unix distro to provide configuration utilities, but i have to say 
that they are doing a rather poor job at doing that :( (and yes, i have 
tried yast2 and mandrake control panel, and im not really impressed)
