it's the new buzz-word that will be used to make the new menu sound spiffy. 
;-)

but seriously: the task oriented approach assumes that the user wishes to 
accomplish tasks, such as browse the web or read email, rather than run 
konqueror or launch kmail. it's a semantic difference that translates into 
the UI.

the result is that in the menu there is (ideally) one entry for each task the 
user wishes to accomplish on a regular basis and an application/command 
attached to each one of those tasks. therefore not every application is 
shown, just sets of tasks ...

the end result should be that the user says to themself, "I want to go to a 
web site" and be able to select that task from the menu w/out worrying about 
what exact program is being launched.

and of course, the actual application/command associated with each task can be 
alterred, so whether they use Konqueror or Mozilla, they  will still be 
"Browsing the web" according to the menu...
