I remember there used to be a "New Mail Notification" icon on the side.  Maybe 
it was removed because there were too few options.

ef KMail later had the functionality to report based on your receiving 
mailboxes (You have received mail from Account 1), then you could likely use 
one separate module...

I barely look at that myself, but this is a consideration.  I'm putting it in
