conversly, how hard should it be to rename them when you want to?

while i think having an accessable way of renaming your desktops is a Good 
Thing, i completely agree with you that the current way is too accessable ... 
;-) i think dropping the feature completely is perhaps too harsh though; what 
about:

 o only enter edit mode when double clicked
 o add a "Change desktop name" entry to the RMB menu

either of those should make it harder to mistakenly enter rename mode while 
retaining the ability to quickly change the name of your desktop.
