How about being more descriptive with your Apply/Preview/Test buttons, like,

"Test Firewall Rules" (assuming that fits into a button)
"Preview Colour Changes"
"Apply Mouse Settings"

If we wanted to be really picky, we could use all three for different 
scenarios but I think that'll probably end up being more trouble than it's 
worth for both users and designers.  People just want to be able to see their 
changes and have the ability to revert back if they suck.

For instance, I think that if you're playing with any sort of look and feel, 
there should be a "Preview" window that gets dynamically updated as you 
change colours, and there should be a sort of "Undo" button in case they 
think things are uglier than they thought.
