I spent about 6 months porting over my application Kinkatta to KDE from pure 
QT and had to learn the xml system and like it very much.

For an easy example of the xmlui code take a look at one of the kde games 
(one that uses it, I am in the process of moving the rest over) Pretty much 
you declare KAction variables and then call createGUI(xml file) and that is 
it.  It does the menu/toolbar/help/about setup along with allowing the user 
to customize the toolbar if they wantto.

As for designer anyone that hasn't used designer I highly recomend it.  You 
get to look at exacly what it will look like and the short, but very good 
docs are well worth spending 5 minutes reading.  I often will prototype out 
all sorts of stuff in Designer simply because it is so easy.
