to all of you arguing for a change in file structure: know that it will not 
happen. there are too many different OS's involved, too may legacy apps, too 
many users comfortable with the current system and too many technical 
considerations you are missing completley (e.g. translation from english -> 
other languages at the file system level; reasons for seperation between /, 
/usr, /usr/local; volument management issues such as /var and /boot being on 
the root for good reasons). i also believe that no matter what method you 
pick, you will find that new users don't grok it right away anyways.

remember that in Unix there are users (who should be concerened with their ~) 
and administrators (who need to manage the system). for those that are 
stradling the fence between those two roles, applications (e.g. KControl) 
should provide an interface to ease the issues. konqueror could indeed have 
an "easy" mode that provides a simplified view of the file system.

but touching the base file system is a dubious effort and will not happen.
