Stefan,
	It would appear that the SANE libraries/utilities included under 
"/opt/fsw4sun" to go along with your KDE distribution do not work with USB 
scanners.  However, the bits of SANE that Sun included between "/opt/sfw" and 
"/usr/sfw" do appear to work just perfectly fine with my USB scanner.

P.S. It seems like there are a bunch of things in /opt/fsw4sun that are also 
included with Solaris 10 (some require software companion CD).  It also seems 
like I need to put /optfsw4sun first in my path for everything in KDE to work 
correctly (as you built against that stuff), but I often need to change that 
path when doing anything else, since the /opt/fsw4sun stuff seems 
broken/weird occasionally as compared with /opt/sfw,/usr/sfw stuff.
