the Xsun server (Solaris 8) doesn't seem to support the xkb extension,
and the list of keyboard layouts in the control center is empty.

When you configured KDE 3.1.4 for Solaris, was there some choice of
keyboard handling (or does there exist a xkb extension for Xsun)?

The compose key does have a keysym, but it is ignored by KDE, but not
by other apps that do their own thing, for example, old OpenWindows
programs.
