This was my experience just working at a company where some projects
were using Gerrit and some were open Git repos.

So if I needed to contribute a patch to something I normally didn't work on:
Project uses Gerrit -> cool, I know exactly how to contribute.
Project uses plain Git -> erm, well, open up git log and try sending
patch to an email address that shows up a lot. Or ask in IRC. Or ask
my manager to ask their manager. Etc.

I think this is why github has taken off among the current generation
of new open source projects. The method to contribute for newcomers is
just part of the infrastructure.
