OK Rex... I hope you get this when you get back. Rest Well.

First off... I won't be able to give 4.1 beta a serious test because its
running on a computer thats hooked up to my TV only. So I'm working at
800X600 and of course with the TV's dot pitch with a Legacy NVidia card and
no adequate driver yet for Fedora 9.

Be that as it may.... Much much better than 4.0. Once the Xinerama issues are
dealt with for the newer version of Xorg then I will probably get my main
desktop upgraded.

As usual. Thank you for your great work

Eli

Hello,

I tried smb:/ and it came up empty. I also tried smb://servername
and that did not work. Bug? I am on Fedora 8 and Samba 3.0.30.

Hi

I have been using kde-4.1b1 from unstable and it is working well, very well
:-)

There are however a few minor things with Kontact.
I cannot configure Akregator, on trying to bring up the config dialog the
"configure Kontact" box appears instead asking which App to start when
starting Kontact.

There are no system notifications (audio or visual) at all with Apps in
Kontact, eg Kmail and Akregator and I am unable to configure them at all.
Maybe I am missing something in the system settings?

Running Kmail or Akregator for example as stand alone Apps all is fine though.

I understand this is a Beta but would be interested to know if anyone else has
this problem.

The other thing I seem to be getting even before the update, ie when I was
running 4.0.5 are Selinux errors when logging out of kde associated with KDM.
I seem to remember reading somewhere this was fixed but needless to say I cant
think where that was, possibly in one of the KDE Sig meetings?

I'm off to search kde.bugs now but any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Colin

I don't see that happening now.
Hopefully you see it fixed in beta2.

You might try going into System Settings, then the Notifications page
and setting stuff in there. Yes, it does seem that setting notifications
from within Kontact is broken.

I'll put it on the big-list-of-stuff-to-fix.

OK thanks for the info, I see Beta2 is due soon and hope Rex can find the time
maybe to build it for F9

I'll see if I can set it up in System settings during the week,

Ok..

Indeed, a lot of work and not many to help sadly :(

kde-4.1 is a great step forward and thanks to all involved.

First off, I know I have had little to know productivity so please
forgive the possible rudeness.

But I am quite concerned by the non technical challenges that KDE in
Fedora seems to be facing these days.

1. The "powers that be" of Fedora still seem to consider KDE a "second
class" citizen. I have publicly defended against this perception in
the past, so this is a bit important to me.

2. Some F9 and F10 users seem to feel very strongly about the KDE 4.x
experience. Nothing good seems to be coming out of the ongoing
discussions.

Seems like you guys have enough technical problems to deal with as it
is. What are "we" going to do about this?

I intend to put more effort in myself soon, but I have some personal
hurdles to overcome.

Hmm, what about multilib packages? Seems like qt*.i386 packages should
also be in the x86_64 repositories, otherwise there are file
conflicts, e.g.

file /usr/share/qt4/translations/qt_de.qm from install of
qt-4.4.0-5.fc9.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
qt-4.3.5-1.fc9.i386

Or do I have to change my .repo somehow to generally enable the i386 repos?

Not at all. Thanks for the candor.

Nod. We all need to stay vigilant.

Really, what makes you think that?

Let me offer a different take: I think it's been valuable... both in
hearing all sides' opinions, and in identifying folks' concerns. From
the recent fedora-list thread, my perception of it was that most people
seem to be satisfied with how things are progressing, and that there are
only a few very vocal members of our community who are genuinely unhappy.

> Seems like you guys have enough technical problems to deal with as it
> is. What are "we" going to do about this?

Some very interested people seem to be unhappy about decision-making,
but only after-the-fact. Heck, an analogy I've been tempted to use
recently is this: sometimes folks who don't vote end up being those who
complain most about their elected politicians.

fedora/kde is always open to new ideas and (constructive) criticism, so
my point is that if these folks are genuinely that passionate about kde,
I'd challenge them to become more involved in the process.

kde-redhat repos have never been multilib (it's a pain in the arse to
get right), sorry.

If you want multilib, you'll need to deal with it manually, either by
installing i386 stuff by hand or by also enabling the i386 repo.

Suggestions, help here welcome.
