And, if you weren't already aware, using yum to upgrade 3.x -> 4.x is
not a recommended/supported method of upgrading. YMMV.

Yes, it is in the i386 repo. Apt-get can't seem to find it in the x86_64 repo.
And here is the ffmpeg compatibility issue raising its ugly head again.
akode-extras requires libavformat.so.50.
I'm going to have to right Mathias about that.

That one is there too:

Turns out that ffmpeg provided by freshrpms is newer than that provided by
livna. I know, I know use livna. We'll see. :)

Yeah, that pisses me off to no end. Both livna/freshrpm *know* about
these incompatibilities, but there's not much movement to actually *do*
anything about it.

Yes, you are right. Today, everything works as fine as usual. But I
have not changed anything, maybe this was a problem of my internet
provider?

I made a local copy of the "centos 4.3" and "all" pieces and ran
"yum-arch -l ." on them to get me past the missing headers problem.
The problem now is centos-related (udev/kernel conflict), which is
off-topic for this list so I won't bother anyone with further details.
One thing you might want to fix: I ran into a problem with
liquid-0-0.9.7-3.el4 -- it has a bogus version in it, something like
"%{epoch}.0.9.7". The CentOS 3.8 version of yum aborts on it; python
throws an exception when converting that string to a long.
I manually edited the .hdr and .rpm files to fix it for the moment.
