Rex, Yes, we are doing it the same way as we did before.

Shortly after I posted the message, a co-worker discovered that the X
process (/usr/X11R6/bin/X)
had an extra command line option "-nolisten tcp" on the new version. The
kdm config file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
had the option "ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp" uncommented.
I commented it out and did a CTRL-ALT-Backspace and it worked..

You're manually managing DISPLAY and permissions and such?

It WORKSFORME using ssh tunneling (and X forwarding).

Can anyone confirm that amarok can't play mp3s using the xine engine now?

Error loading media .... There is no available decoder.

You need to install xine-lib-extras-nonfree (from livna) for the nonfree
codec support.

I noticed that the faad2 and faac updates from freshrpms messed up a few
programs like mplayer that were installed from the livna repo. I ended
up just disabling the freshrpms repo and reinstalling faad2 and faac
from livna.

Also, like Rex mentioned, do you have
xine-lib-extras-nonfree-1.1.3-3.lvn6 installed?

xine-lib is now in Extras. Unless rpmforge provides an alternate (or
otherwise compatible with Extras) implmentation of xine-lib, livna is it
(as far as options go).
