Step 1 ... Vent
Argh. This HAL 0.5.x dependence sucks. :) And so does nautilus.

I really like coolo's comments in the kde hal code ...

   File size: 43223 byte(s)
hal 0.4 simply won't work any more

Question for anyone ... how bad might I break the kioslave:media if I just
snag the working 3.5.3 code and stuff it into the 3.5.4 release? Or is that
a stupid idea?

Stupid? No. Big waste of time (sorting out wierd breakage)? Probably. (:

Well it compiled so far and I now have an rpm. I'm heading upstairs to give
my new 3.5.4 + old media:/ kludge a look. Wish me luck ;)

Note: the reason I'm whining about this is that I had about 50 Centos 4 with
kde-redhat installs that lost the ability to nicely mount USB key drives with
the automatic yum upgrade. So there has been a lot of complaints. And
Nautilus wasn't cutting it as a work around.

OK. Looks like is works. All I did was ...

Take your latest 3.5.4 src.rpm and in the kdebase-3.5.4.tar.bz2 replace
the kioslave/media directory with the kdebase-3.5.3.tar.bz2's kioslave/media
directory.
     Comment out the dbus patch.
     Change the release to _6.3
     rpm --bb kdebase.spec

The resulting rpm upgraded kdebase on the Centos 4.4 system and now media:/
mounting and/or unmounting work again. Yeah!

Hmm... heck, if it's really that easy, I might just do that too. The
bummer part is that we miss out on any other bugfixes included in
kioslave/media too.

Personally ...
for kde-devs to require HAL 0.5 is something for a kde 3.6 or 4.0 release.
Not for 3.5.x. The HAL dependencies are ...
  Linux kernel 2.6.15 (or later)
  util-linux 2.12r1 (or later)
  udev 083 (or later)
  dbus 0.60 (or later)
  glib 2.6.0 (or later)
  expat 1.95.8 (or later)
  bash 2.0 (or later)

Anyway, this problem is only on the non-latest-and-greatest distros (like
Redhat Enterprise). So I don't think forking kde-redhat from the standard
kde release is the way to go.

Unfortunately, there (most likely) won't *be* any post kde-3.5.x
releases (other than kde 4, of course, which is still quite a ways off).
