Yes and no. As you may be aware development has stopped for apt-get for RPMS
but you can still find rpms for apt-get at http://atrpms.net for fc5 and I
just checked, and it looks like you will still be able to get it from there
for fc6. Freshrpms still support apt-get, obviously rpmforge still supports
it and kde-redhat still supports it (thanks Rex). The pain here is that Livna
does not so any package that is required from Livna has to be downloaded
manually.

Not wanting to open up an old debate. I prefer apt-get because of the ability
to set up priorities rather than relying on the program choosing for me what
package to get from what repo based on weights. Smart and Yum work that way
and sends me on a merry go round sometimes and / or installs packages from
repos that I don't want to get them from even though there are some packages
from them that I do want. Priorities allow me to be very very selective.
Anyway, I'll live with the manual Livna downloads. I really don't like
programs thinking for me.

>

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is a no go because the only computer that
I have access from the outside is the computer that I will need to upgrade.
And I really don't want to spend the time in the shop suppervising the
progress bar if I don't have to.

Anyway, the question still remains. If I use yum to do an distribution
upgrade, should I just upgrade from fc packages and then get third party
stuff or is it OK to get third party stuff at the same time. Recommendations.

Eli

Subject: [kde-redhat-users] Recent KDE screen-saver problems
Message: 3

Hi,

Obviously, there have been som problems with screen savers in KDE 3.5.3. The
latest patch that is believed to fix things is from the FreeBSD folks (?).

I'm still having a problem:

I don't use the "Start automatically" option in the KDE screen saver (yes, I
have the screen saver disabled). I solely use DPMS for blanking, after about
30 minutes of inactivity. However, now my screen has started blanking after
no time at all (about one minute of inactivity causes blanking, and I've not
configured this anywhere).

So, here's what's going on:
$ xset q|grep Saver -A2
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 70 cycle: 600

X has blanking configured, even though I haven't set that _anywhere_.

So, how to fix ? Well, I go to KControl->Appearance & Themes->Screen Saver and
check the "Start automatically"-box, then "Apply". X blanking remains
unchanged:
$ xset q|grep Saver -A2
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 70 cycle: 600

However, if I now un-check "Start automatically", then click "Apply", X
blanking is properly disabled:
$ xset q|grep Saver -A2
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 0 cycle: 600

(Timeout of 0 means disabled, I guess.)

So it seems like there's something missing during initialization, ie. screen
saver config is not properly applied during KDE boot. I can't imagine this is
very hard to fix, so I might have a look at it, but I was wondering if
someone else is seeing this, as well.

$ rpm -qv kdelibs kdebase qt
kdelibs-3.5.3-8.0.fc4.kde
kdebase-3.5.3-9.1.fc4.kde
qt-3.3.6-11.0.fc4.kde

Hi!

I have recently upgraded to the new version 1.5.2 of koffice and i have seen
kword constantly crashing on upstart. Just kword not kspread, kexi, krita and
the others. Anyone who had seen that? Anyone who had come to a conclusion?

AFAIR there is now support in apt-rpm for the repo format used by yum.

FWIW Axel also maintains apt-get in Extras, so there should not be many
differences between these two versions.

Update: apt (for rpm) development has resumed, with a new maintainer.
So it's not so dead afterall.

Eli,

When I upgraded from FC4 to FC5, I did core, extras, updates, livna and
kde-redhat all at once. Took a long time, but it did work using yum.

Yes, I have seen that (2.6.17-1.2159_FC5, kdelibs-3.5.3-11.0.fc5.kde,
kdebase-3.5.3-9.1.fc5.kde). But my only conclusion was to downgrade
back to koffice 1.5.1.
