OK...

Firstly, the main symptom is that Firefox opens and then immiediately closes 
without so much as a debug dialogue box.

Found the culprit to be baghira installed from fc4. I successfully recompiled 
baghira 7 from sources after applying the patch that was available at

(So... will there finally be fc5 packages of baghira available. Please... 
pretty please with sugar on top.)  :)

The problem persisted. The new gtk-qt-engine worked fine with bluecurve.
