Yuck, what a mess. So how does one determine what .i386 bits should be
in x86_64?

In general, yum/anaconda installs an i386 version of each x86_64 RPM, if
such RPM exists.
Once it's installed, the true fun begins ;)

However, this is only true for core/updated. Extra only has x86_64
packages which creates huge amount of dependency hell by itself...

Hello,

On trying to install amarok-extras-nonfree from livna, I get the
following error message. Does anybody knows where to get the suitable
amarok package from? Thanks a lot!

I've spent a fair amount of time googling and searching through threads/lists
but I haven't found an answer to this ..

When I try to "yum update", I always get:
Error: Package mDNSResponder conflicts with avahi.

(I'm using the standard FC5 repos + livna and kde-redhat .. I have avahi
installed at the moment, but not mDNSresponder).

I understand that these two projects conflict with each other .. but I'm not
sure what I'm supposed to do about that.

Should I uninstall avahi? I'm only using KDE on FC5, so I don't care too much
about GNOME working, however I see these dependencies on Avahi:

gnome-vfs2-2.14.1-1.fc5.2.i386
avahi-glib-0.6.9-8.FC5.i386

Is mDNSResponder the kde-redhat choice for zeroconf?

If that's true, I wonder about this (from the avahi website):
"Avahi is mainly based on Lennart Poettering's flexmdns mDNS implementation
for Linux which has been discontinued in favour of Avahi."

Thanks for any clarification that can be given.

For everything not fc5, yes.

Else,

yum install kdelibs kdnssd-avahi
should do the trick.

You shouldn't have any need or want for mDNSResponder on fc5 (especially
since it specifically Conflicts with avahi at the moment).

The amoark-extras-nonfree pkg goofed it up a bit. It should only
Requires: amarok >= 1.4
not
Requires: amarok >= 1.4.0

Or (not recommended) you can force use of mDNSResponder by first
removing avahi, then
yum install kdelibs kdelibs-libkdnssd

Nope nope, version 1.4 final should be in Extras, and it's numbered 1.4.0
(Not me ! Upstream did it !)

This is the one that should be picked up by yum. Maybe your mirror is out of
sync, you should try again with another mirror.

The only "intuitive" interface is the nipple. After that it's all learned.

I have yummed the new cups and cups-libs 1.2.1-1.2 rpms this Tuesday
morning. I can connect to cups via localhost:631 and also using
system-config-printer.

However, when I try to configure or print a test page using kde control
centre, I cannot connect to the print server. My configured printers do not
show up and I cannot configure any.

The result is that under firefox and open office, I can reach my printer,
ie, it is listed, and can presumably print pages. I printed a test page from
system-config-printer successfully.

Under any kde application, however, no printers are listed and it is not
possible to configure any, as it is impossible to connect to the print
server. The problem seems only to affect kde applications. The files
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf and printers.conf have changed ownership now. They used
to be group nobody, but are group lp now. Could this have something to do
with it?

Has anyone tried printing since yumming the new cups?
