Hi, I too am switching to a new machine. I tried this, and while it
did successfully copy my configuration settings and email over, it did
not successfully copy my passwords (which I guess are stored in
kwallet?), nor did it copy my spamassissin training data which I've
worked on for so many months now.

Pretty much the same story, here. Except I use Spambayes, but that software is
so fast with training, that it's no big deal. I expected the passwords to not
copy, so I wasn't surprised. Otherwise, it worked like a champ - nice to not
have to set up all those folders and filters all over, and end up with a
fairly current archive.

How is Spambayes? I have noticed that spamassassin takes a long time
to lean, and spamassassin has troubles with certain types of spam, and
stuff that isn't spam never seems to get a smaller spam percentage
(ive flaged over 3000 cvs messages as not spam, and they still show up
as 98% spam)

Spambayes is great. In a couple of days of training it rapidly climbs to over
80% of spam being rejected. After a couple of weeks, it gets up in the high
nineties. Now that it's integrated into Kmail, in the sense that Kmail will
detect it and automatically configure several things for you if you let it,
it's even better. It's a little tricky to set up, but not that tricky, You
have to start the spambayes server at boot, which I do with a command in
rc.local - then there's a configuration page you bring up with your browser,
that lets you tell it what your pops are, and what ports to proxy on - I
don't use most of the advanced features, and don't filter outgoing, so it's
two fields to fill in... I even use it on all my Windows machines.

Obviously, you can do it that way, but it's perhaps also worth saying
that you can use chkconfig to set up the usual sort of init scripts. See
the manpage for info.

What manpage? There is none for spambayes, if that's what you mean. I found
some info on the Spambayes website about using init scripts, but it was for
Suse, and I couldn't get it to work. What's the advantage of starting with an
init script and using chkconfig over starting with a command in rc.local?
Never could find an answer to that question except that the init script
method allowed for easy start/stopping when booted up.

I meant the manpage for chkconfig(8). If you don't have it: yum install
chkconfig.

Well, that's the main advantage, but it also allows you (i) to tailor
running services to runlevels (which you can manage with chkconfig, as
well as system-config-services), (ii) to start and stop services in an
appropriate order (what's in rc.local is run last, linked from
/etc/rc?.d/S99local), and (iii) if you want, you can modify the default
startup scripts to do a lot more than start up and shut down. There may
or may not be such advantages in this case, but at the very least it
makes things cleaner.

OK - I do understand chkconfig and use it all the time

This is pretty much what I'd adduced from my readings.
In my case, I really didn't need to start/stop things.
There didn't seem to be other things in the sample script that I thought I
needed.
I couldn't get the sample script to work with my FC4 box.
The setup works well as I've got it, for the moment, so, till greater need
arises, I guess I'll leave it alone.

There certainly seems to be no issues with starting the spambayes server up at
the very end of the boot sequence. In fact, in a MEPIS network I have set up
at my office, they don't offer the rc.local option, so I used a script to
start the spambayes server as part of my kde desktop startup, and that also
worked...

Hey, I installed spambayes and it seems to be working really well for
the first 24 hours. I didn't bother with any init scripts or web face
config screens, I just installed the rpm, and ran the kmail wizard.
I'm assuming kmail starts it for me when needed so I don't need to
muck around with all this init.d business.

Pretty much as simple as can be. I also like the "Probable Spam"
feature as well.

I don't use spamassassin, so I can't tell you for sure where that
training data is. And where it is will likely also depend upon how
precisely you're using it. But if you run "locate spamassassin", you'll
presumably find it somewhere. Possibly in ~/.spamassassin/.
