Sorry for the bad Title. Forgot to change it...

Amarok is from extras.

Hi

Since, it would seem, that repos have been warning or ending support for
apt-get, I decided to give yum another go. Is the there a command or switch
that tells yum simply to download updates without updating.

If not, and if there is room on kde-redhat's servers could kde-redhat mirror
livna because I do not want to have to get out of KDE / X waiting to download
X if I need to update kde-base, kde-libs, X, or qt. Especially if kde-redhat
plans to continue support for apt-get.

Thanks

Eli

I miss APT having moved over to Yum, however you could try yumdownloader from
the yum-utils package, some brief info here:

http://blog.sethdot.org/index.cgi/233.html

My Test:

[g6avk@localhost ~]$sudo /usr/bin/yumdownloader libicu
livna                     100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
kde-redhat-testing        100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
kde-redhat-stable-all     100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
kde-redhat-stable         100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00

kde-redhat-testing-all    100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
updates                   100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
updates-released          100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
extras                    100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
libicu-3.4-3.1.i386.rpm   100% |=========================| 4.5 MB    00:16

I have not had time to set it up properly but it does work in a fashion,
having never explored the "plugins" feature of Yum I cant be of anymore help
just yet ;-(
Perhaps some of the yum GUI's may make life a bit easier to set this up.

Here is a thread on this subj:

https://devel.linux.duke.edu/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id10

I also noticed on some lists an "op" posted his output of the Yum command from
the CLI and "--download-only" - only download packages - do not run the
transaction is an option.. but not seen here on this box, my version of Yum
is 2.4.0

AFAICT this option keeps being dropped?? I will investigate some more,

HTH

Thanks Collin. I'll give it a look-see. I already miss APT :( .

OK.. some progress,
I have managed to get the "hello world" plugin to work that has been discussed
in the various plugin docs, which led to me explore further.

More success after Lunch:

[g6avk@localhost yum_plugins]$ yum
Loading "download_only" plugin

SNIPPED

  --downloadonly        don't update, just download

### Looks promising..

[g6avk@localhost yum_plugins]$ sudo yum install --downloadonly silky
Loading "download_only" plugin
Setting up Install Process

SNIP

Install      1 Package(s)
Update       0 Package(s)
Remove       0 Package(s)
Total download size: 225 k
Is this ok [y/N]: y
Downloading Packages:
(1/1): silky-0.5.4-1.i386 100% |=========================| 225 kB    00:01

exiting because --downloadonly specified

###

[g6avk@localhost yum_plugins]$ ls /var/cache/yum/extras/packages/
silky-0.5.4-1.i386.rpm

Success :-)

The python code is here:

http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/WritingYumPlugins

And with a little work in Python (Syntax errors due to formatting of the text)
I mananged to get it to run ok.
man yum and man yum.conf also helped with seting up the DIR's.
I just created a "yum_plugins" in my home DIR and pointed yum to that in
yum.conf

HTH

Which Amarok release are you using ? Does it happen on each track change ?
Please bugzilla it.

Thanks Colin

For pointing me in the right direction. The plugin that was described on the
howto worked :) . However yumex crashes after adding the plugin. and the
current version is the best of the gui's. :( . Reported the bug to Fedora
(twice actually by mistake). Don't know which one they'll mark as duplicate,
so here are both URLs incase you want to keep track.

Thanks again.

I go back on forth on this. The GUI for Synaptic was definitely my favorite.
Having the 'Currently Installed' column and the 'Available' column to compare
side by side was my favorite. Kyum had the 'Installed' column for awhile, but
never populated it. The recent update took that column out. Other than that,
Kyum is now my favorite. I find Yumex less flexible. So, I'm curious, why do
you think it's the "best of the gui's"? You got me started on Synaptic, so
I'm interested in the feature set you like.

Cool :)

<blush> I don't use any Yum GUI's so never tested that,
So I grabbed KYum and Yumex to test and indeed they both fail until I disable
the plugin.

OK, I will watch that with interest... thanks!
