Yes, in the kde-redhat repo, to fix this exact problem.

$ yum update
should have upgraded it.

If you installed kde-redhat's kdeartwork, it includes:

Requires: xscreensaver-base >= 1:4.21

which would have pulled in the known-to-work version.

In the last couple of days, a koffice RPM has appears in Fedora Extras
that is versioned to replace the one from KDE-RedHat. This in and of itself
is not bad, but it is also split up into several subpackages, like :

 koffice-core i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 3.3 M
 koffice-filters i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 2.1 M
 koffice-karbon i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 839 k
 koffice-kchart i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 1.2 M
 koffice-kexi i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 2.6 M
 koffice-kformula i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 672 k
 koffice-kivio i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 1.3 M
 koffice-kpresenter i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 2.6 M
 koffice-krita i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 3.0 M
 koffice-kspread i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 2.0 M
 koffice-kugar i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 481 k
 koffice-kword i386 1.4.1-4.fc4 local_extras-stable 3.8 M

Worse, it is a package built without epoch so for some reason, it gets
priority over the epoch 4 koffice from KDE-RedHat. Question is, if we install
this beast by mistake or intentionally, will future koffice rpms from
KDE-RedHat have this layout as well or will they have Provides/Obsoletes to
take care of upgrading over this mess?

We'll be following Extras's lead, and package it likewise. As a matter
of fact, now that koffice is in Extras, kde-redhat, most likely, will no
longer provide it (for FC4 and newer).

You saying the soundcard detetion app doesn't play anything? If so,
there more wrong than just KDE.

If I read Rex correctly, he is using the same video card with the xorg
built-in drivers, successfully. I defer to his far greater knowledge. I only
suggested the driver issue as a possibility...

I am just curious and I have looked carefully into the differences.
Is there any significant difference between extras and your packages?

If there is we could lobby in extras to add the differences back. :-)

PS: Completely unrelated and out of topic here but... do intend to submit the
maxima package that you had for some time to extras? :-)

In general, we follow Extras' lead, unless I vehemently disagree with
their packaging decisions (which hasn't occurred... yet).

Yep, I was just working on that yesterday... (-:

For reasons I've yet to figure out, I occasionally have kded and fam
continue running after logging out. This results in a significant
performance hit as extra RAM and CPU time is consumed. Any ideas what
would be causing this problem? I've done a quick google on "kded fam
after logout" but did not get any useful hits.

Using KDE 3.4.1 as packaged by kde-redhat on Fedora Core 2.

FWIW, 'killall kded' does nothing, I need to 'killall -9 kded' in order
to kill kded (and fam with it). When executing 'free' after that, it
does not appear that any RAM is being cleared.

Thanks,
Tim

I happen to be using a SoundBlaster Live! Value sound card. It worked on my
previous FC3 install.

What could be wrong then? Sound plays in XP (Dual-boot).

Folks,

At http://acoustics.mines.edu/~hans/kde342/ you can find KDE 3.4.2
compiled for Fedora Core 2.

These RPMs are not supported or waranted in any way. I do not have time
to be a packager like Rex. If you want additional things compiled, do it
yourself, it is not hard. Rex writes excellent .spec files. If you find
a bug, fix it and tell me the solution. I'll incorporate it.

A few notes as I remember them:

* Twice gcc or gas would just die with a segfault or internal
compiler error. Rerunning "rpmbuild" helped there.

* Most packages are tagged ".fc2." but not all, for no good reason. All
packages were compiled for fedora 2.

* kdebindings were compiled for Sun's java SDK which for me lives in
/usr/java/jdk

* kdeartwork does not have a requirement for xscreensaver because I do
not have that installed. But I had xscreensaver installed for the build
process, so it should work for you one way or the other.

* qt is compiled without immodule and sql support

* installing redhat-menus-3.8-0.1.kde gives this warning:
    /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu saved as
    /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.rpmsave
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.redhat has not been configured as
    an alternative for applications.menu
I do not know what that means

REX: should I use kde-menus or redhat-menus? They appear to be mutually
exclusive.

* I signed everything with my key

* I also use AT-rpms, newrpms, dries, dag, freshrpms, livna etc.
These packages might have dependencies on things you do not have
installed. YMMV.

Hope this helps.

Hans

It's harmless.

redhat-menus. kde-menus is pretty much deprecated.
