Ack, gnokii has gone missing from *all* the repos! Not sure how that
happened... restored them from backup. All should be good now (at least
for el4)

Hi Rex

Just in case nobody noticed. A relatively major change has occurred to the fc4
distribution. Some key packages that were included in the main distribution
have been moved over to extras. For me, the most notable of these is the
cyrus imap server.

I guess another complication.

By the way... As usual Rex Great job. I've downloaded and installed your
perliminary repackaging. Things seem to be working relatively smoothly.
Looking forward to the official release

Eli

Sounds fine, but is this compatible to GPL (if the omitted sources are
such)? Perhaps adding a note in the repo that sources will be mailed
to upon request is already enough (but IANAL and am always confused by
license language).

OTOH if you'd like more developer manpower to help out in kde-redhat
then having the full src.rpm available could turn out to be
helpful. I'm thinking of people picking up src.rpms and rebuilding on
RHEL or x86_64, ppc and so on. Well, I'm probably thinking of myself
... ;)

How much space do you need?

Just to add, I'm getting the kmail crash now, on my second machine FC3->FC4
upgrade. It happens when I reply to a message, after I've typed my response
and click 'send', Kmail just vanishes, closes down.

This is a reply made from the first box I upgraded, just to test whether I
missed this problem on the first go.

I had the same problem, and a host of others. Not only with kde apps, but with
gnome and gnome apps as well. The reason for this was due to getting packages
from other 3rd parties. I just spent the last 2 days cleaning out an awful
lot of stuff and replacing them manually from fedora and freshrpms. Freshrpms
has not released officially. But an awful lot of stuff is availale with apt.
Probably with yum as well. The problem is that awful 3rd parties are
generally quicker off the draw then redhat when it comes to version updates.
Unfortunately, and often versions compiled for, oh, lets say fc3 are not
compatible with fc4 due to differences in versioning and so, you'll get
crashes.

You can either manually download and install the original packages from
fedora's download site. You probably will have to force rpm to install the
packages. Or, you can wait until the official releases are available from the
various other 3rd parties that you are getting your packages from.

If you want to do this manually, and before you even ask, the list is to big
to mention. Get gnome-yum its better then kyum for this particular job
because it will allow you to see what is and isn't installed at the same
time, even though its significantly slower.

One other piece of advise, be very careful if you see anything related to
glibc DO NOT RUN rpm -e glibc.

Currently, KDE is running beautifully, kontact / kmail is running no crashes.
arts doesn't crash either. The only thing that I have a problem with is that
I cannot get any system event sounds. I've gone and made sure that the sound
notifications was configured correctly, but, after I log off and log on
again, the sound notification reverts to not using any sound system at all. I
will have to look into this later, but its not on the top of my priority list
as I have a server that I must make sure will run when I upgrade it to fc4.

Good luck.

Eli

Oops meant to say that ...an awful lot of 3rd parties....

I'm sure there is much to what you say, but I feel it can't be the whole
picture. Why? Because I'm typing this response to you on the first machine I
upgraded - it's a plain vanilla everything install of FC3, upgraded to FC4. I
use the yum.conf file from Fedorafaq.org for all my machines, so in the sense
of the original packages installed by the cd, and subsequent updates to those
packages, this machine and the one at home have to be close. The one at home
has been up some months longer, and has a lot of additional stuff installed -
this one is relatively new. On this machine, I'm experiencing no problems
that I know of - the one at home is a completely different story. It's not
just kmail, but python is screwy, and a couple of other things. One
significant difference between the two machines is that this one is running
an older nvidia and my home machine is running an ati with the drivers from
livna - don't know if that could be an issue or not, just noting it.

For now, I can live with things. I'm just using Thunderbird at home, though I
have to say that that's a real regression for me now - funny that, because I
use to really like Thunderbird. Thread control just takes so many more
clicks, and the creation of filters is so much more work than kmail, just to
name two things... but that's another topic
I plan to sit things out for awhile, and see if updates take care of things.
