I'm using a fresh install of CentOS and I've got my yum.conf set to...

Trying my first install I get ....

My system has the following already installed....

Any ideas????

I've talked with one other person with CentOS 3.x that had the same
problem and sure enough I hit it too.

The GPL contains a section regarding source code:
----------------------------------------------
   3. You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based on it,
under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of
Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:
     a) Accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable
     source code...
...
The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for
making modifications to it. For an executable work, complete source
code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any
associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to
control compilation and installation of the executable.
----------------------------------------------

Now, I am of the opinion that if one distributes RPMS containing GPL'd
software, the GPL requires that one provide the RPM source code, ie, the
src.rpms, because
1. It is the "preferred form" of the work (in the context of rpms)
2. The src.rpm contains the rpm specfile, which is one of the "scripts
used to control compilation and installation".

When I raised this issue on another list (regarding a vendor of GPL
software, who distributes binary rpms, but only provides source tarballs
without either specfile or src.rpms), I was soundly trounced for being
an unreasonable idiot.

Now the real question: Am I really an unreasonable idiot? (I'm pretty
sure I'm at least not unreasonable... (-: )

One argument I see for being wrong is that the GPL applies *only* to the
binary executables, and not to their packaging.

What do you think?

Ok, If you decided not to ignore, here's why I needed this:

Some time ago my messages started getting rejected by the spamfilter
of SourceForge, even though my address is registered there. I
contacted the SourceForge people, and they supposedly solved the
problem. I am testing this now.

an RPM, while being a package, is the deliverable binary form. The .spec
is a vital part of the source code used to generate this binary.

I see this, pretty clearly, as a GPL violation. But then thats just me.

Thanks. They have reopened it since they see the problem on FC4.

I guess my question is, why is it happening on FC3 + kde-redhat but not with
FC3 ( no kde-redhat ) ? Is it that kde-redhat artwork RPM on kde-redhat was
taken from FC4test ?

I dont have FC4 yet ... will take some time to one up and running.

I'm back home, now. The machine is up and all seems well. Maybe one of those
earlier steps actually worked, and I didn't test properly -- at any rate,
both machines have stopped blacking out for now.

I had the same problem the last weekend. My laptop has a Radeon 9M.

It is interesting that after updating the kernel for 2.6.11-1.20_FC3 and
all packages last Monday this problem disappeared.

That problem stroked me as something related with a bad interaction
between the kernel and the screensavers as it only happened after the
letting the computer unattended for some time.

But as I said before this was gone after updating explicitly the kernel
and the other packages. So whatever you have done thanks Rex. ;-)

I'm curious - where are people getting this new kernel? Is this a testing or
unstable? I do regular yum updates, but this one hasn't appeared.

Shouldn't have spoken so soon - I walked away from the machine for five
minutes and when I returned, the screen was blacked out with only the X
cursor visible...
