Ahoy,

With the KDE marketing meeting coming up in the near future, I think it would
be good to consider a communications strategy, either in parallel or
integrated with the resulting marketing strategy. I don't have the mental
energy to expand on this at length, but here's a brief outline of what the
strategy should ideally cover:

- The context in which we are communicating about KDE
- Key target audiences
- Key communication themes / messages
- Mechanisms available to us
  o Events
o Press (releases, channel, direct contact)
  o Web sites
  o Products themselves
- Crisis management
  o Identify potential detractors
o Issues we're likely to be challenged on
o Issues we should respond to, inc external (e.g. software patents)
o Develop a strategy for a range of likely circumstances with an FAQ
- Budget and manpower assessment
- A calendar of known events

The idea is to make sure we are approaching the communication part of
marketing strategically, acting on our research and not getting stuck in
pointless work, putting out fires, etc.

Basically, if those going to the meeting could either directly address this
issue, or keep it in mind, that would be a start. If we could end up with a
10-page strategy document by the time we come round to preparing for the
release of KDE 4.0 that would be ideal.

Regards,
Tom
