I sorta like the direction they went. The sounds are essentially the same, 
but "ambiance" is much better. Pre Vista notifications were 
obnoxious "BAAANGGG!!!"-type. They were like the Mac's booting sound, which 
in turn always reminds me of that Dolby Surround Sound joke in the Simpsons, 
which now reminds me of the "loud music" torture technique 

The new set gently informs and does not paralyze your for several seconds.
