As announced in an earlier email, I took the axe and went through
events.kde.org. I've moved the vastly outdated bits to /dev/null, the useful
bits to spreadkde.org and left the stuff we want to keep but that has no
direct use on SpreadKDE where it was (mostly history of past akademies, and
the calendar). The events calendar is being worked on, so that is probably
the next step down the road to killing events.kde.org.

Attached patch removes a lot of content and updates most of the links that are
now pointing to SpreadKDE.

Can someone with commit karma apply it to trunk/www/areas/events?

It is necessary for the welfare of society that genius should be privileged to
utter sedition, to blaspheme, to outrage good taste, to corrupt the youthful
mind, and generally to scandalize one's uncles. - George Bernard Shaw

-$faq->addQuestion("Where can I get T-Shirts/brochures/etc.",
-"
-See sections first question in part 2) of this document
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("Where can I get CDs?",
-"
-Well - on one hand CD's are one of the things people will be very much asking
-for. On the other hand it makes basically no sense to print these for various
-reasons:
-

-

-
no recent KDE-release including all binaries for all distributions will fit
-on one CD (and that would be the only fair version).
-

-
Creating a decent amount of CD's would cost A LOT. On the other hand one
-can't make sure to get rid of all of them (one would have to sell them for a
- certain non-profit-amount - while on the other hand there do exist a lot of
-expos where you aren't allowed to sell anything).
-

-
In average KDE-releases are up to date for a period of about 4 months. So
-one would have to:
-

-
create the CD's within that period

-
transfer the CD's to the event

-
sell all of them

-

-That's almost impossible.
-

-

-
-

-So in case visitors at the booth raise the question \"Where can I get CD's
-including the latest KDE release\" the best answer is probably \"At the booth
-of your favorite distributor\" pointing out that all major distributions are
-shipping the latest and greatest KDE. Alternatively you might want to refer to:

-$faq->addQuestion("What do I need to be careful of when exhibiting KDE?",

-Showing KDE running on some actual hardware is an extremely important

-
-
The following, in no particular order, is a list of security measures that can \

-
-
Everyone NOT on the duty schedule for given timeframes but KDE
-participant at the event:

-
-
The explicit right is given to the person responsible at the
-booth for his shift, to kick out any and all KDE developers that have
-no service duties during the shift. There will be no discussion about
-it as you can think of 40 developers overcrowding the booth and turning
-everything into a mess. Please don't be angry if we have to restrict the
-number of people present at the booth, but otherwise we'll end like
-last year with not enough space for the visitors wanting to have information
-and the ones actually doing the service can't do their job as good as they
-could.

-
-
Share your motivation. You're at this event not only for having a
-fun time with the ones you already know online or in real life, but also to
-motivate possible new developers. Although only 1 of 5 will come up
-later and do something, talking people into participation is important

-

-
-$faq->addQuestion("A member of a company or gouvernment administration wants to talk \
                about a
-cooperation with KDE - What should I do?",
-"
-
-Usually, during all duty shifts, there's at least one member of the
-coordinating team at the booth. If you think you cannot handle a task, ask
-one of the coordinators for advice or help. They will know what to do in a
-given situation
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("Someone gave me his business card - What should I do with it?",
-"Collect the cards. Not for trading them, of course, hand them over
-to one of the coordinators. Maybe there's a box to collect the cards so you
-can deposit your cards there. If possible, also write down some notes about
-the person you spoke to and pin them to the card. Remember, if someone hands
-you a business card, he or she has an interest in KDE, and missing a good
-opportunity to acquire a new contact would be bad.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("What should I do if the Linux/KDE installation at a demo point is
-broken?",
-"
-Just chop the one who broke it into tiny pieces :-) No seriously, ask one
-of the coordinators for help. Probably there's a recovery disk that can be
-used to fix the installation in a glance. Please don't try to fix it
-yourself, at least not if the fix is not trivial. And of course: don't curse
-and shout about the shitty equipment and the broken demo point not being
-equipped with your preferred linux distribution.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("I want to present a special program, but it's not installed or \
                doesn't
-work correctly. What can I do?",
-"
-Usually, if more than one demo point is available, some of them are
-equipped with a selected set of software packages. Please do not change this
-preinstalled software, it's there for a purpose. Also, don't install
-additional packages or update from CVS to show the latest and greatest version
-of your preferred toy software. On recent events, we've more than once been in
-trouble as demo points stopped working, because someone updated
-kdelibs from CVS and found he had to recompile all other packages, too,
-because of some incompatibility.

-
-
Probably, there are some demo points at the booth that are dedicated for
-hacking and showing \"bleeding edge\" stuff. You can break these, if you want,
-however you should ask the person responsible for these machines for
-permission.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("A user tells me about a bug and I would like to fix it \
                immidiately. Is
-that ok?",
-"
-Yes, of course, but the prepared demo points are \"hands off\" area. Use one
-of the hacking machines, if available.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("I would like to attend a talk or see the fair. Is it ok to leave \
                the
-booth for some time?",
-"
-Yes, of course. However, we'd appreciate if you did a little planning
-beforehand and communicate your private fair schedule so that we can
-coordinate your booth duty. If you want to leave the booth during your duty
-cycle, ask for permission first.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("What am I responsible for?",
-"
-
-The persons maintaining the demo points are responsible for
-the place they're at. You need to keep an eye on your mousepad and
-most importantly any wireless hardware such as mice and keyboards, also
-PDAs, handhelds and Laptops for demo use. Don't leave your place without
-notifying the one responsible for the booth during your shift. In case
-you're longer away than a couple of minutes (say for a talk), please
-provide another developer taking over your place during that time. The
-root password and the user password for your demo user must be given to the
-succeeding maintainer of the demo point.
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("Hardware loans",
-"
-On many events, hardware is lent from a company in order to not having to use
-personal machines on the booth, especially since loaned hardware often leads to
-better impressions (larger screens, unified hardware). Make sure the transport
-and treatment of the hardware follows these strict rules: Upon arrival, keep the
-packing notes with you, and upon shipment back to the rental company, arrange
-the hardware just like it arrived. Be extra careful with monitors and other
-hardware which might break.

-$faq->addQuestion("What is a social event?",
-"
-A social event often takes place on one evening during a fair and is
-catered by the expo organizer. It has the purpose to bring together the
-exhibitors in a nice atmosphere without visitors. Usually it consists of a
-(very good) buffet and sometimes also a band is playing.

-
-
It depends on the expo organizer, if the social event is for free or if you
-have to buy a ticket. But usually it's quite worth the money since you get a
-good chance to have a nice evening and get in touch with other people.
-Remember, \"social\" comes from \"socialize\", and even KDE developers need to
-develop some social skills if they don't want to end up as pale-green faced
-vampires living in cubicles :)
-");
-
-$faq->addQuestion("What is a booth party?",
-"
-A booth party is run by the company running the booth, and is usually
-taking place at the companies booth (that's why it's called a booth party :).
-Quite often alcohol and music is involved ;-) Sometimes an invitation is
-needed, at least to be catered. Booth parties start 30min or 1 hour after the
-expo has closed and visitors have left the fair. As the social
-event, booth parties are a good opportunity to meet people.
