I completely agree that the existance of such apps has *some* benefit. But
one has to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks which might lead to
conflicting results.

Not necessarily. If there's a specialized software like a CAD or ERP
system that the KDE project is unlikely to ever produce that's a different
issue (isn't QCad even Free Software?). But if there's product with zero
integration (styles, protocols) or contribution (code, tool) to KDE ...
But that's really just my opinion as I personally didn't see any proof of
a "cross pollination" for KDE, yet.
