Nearly one in five small and mid-size businesses today use the free Linux
operating system on the desktop, reflecting a serious challenge to Microsoft's
$2 billion push into a fragmented market with little brand loyalty, a research
firm said Tuesday.

A survey of SMBs found a surprising 19 percent using the open source operating
system on the desktop, along with other freeware, such as OpenOffice, the open
source productivity suite that's an alternative to Microsoft Office, Jupiter
Research, a division of Jupitermedia Corp., said.

"The SMB market has characteristics similar to consumers," Wilcox said. "You see
a lot more tendency to experiment and try different things."

The reason is small businesses, in particular, have far fewer people to train
than large
corporations, so it isn't as expensive to introduce new software and retrain
employees, Wilcox said.
