I think what amu meant is that you can check for non-free packages with vrms :) It's just a perl script which itself is licensed under GPLv2. There's also a KDE equivalent to it: http://mindx.dyndns.org/kde/kvrms/ (I haven't touched it since KDE 2.x days...)
