Basically you are right. Technically you are wrong.

There is *no* root password set at all.

This means: you can't ssh into a running Knoppix, unless there is a root
password set. To achieve that, do

   sudo su
   passwd

Now, you can also login as root.

The default user "knoppix" (or "credativ", on the KDE-e.V.-live-CD)
however has a password set.
