Another reason we graphic designers go for Pantone is that it's cheaper.
if you need print work you chose 1 color and can have many variations.

Say you use Pantone 286 you can use that in variations.
For instance a 10% Pantone 286 gives a very light blue color and a
50% Pantone 286 slight darker than the 10%.

The printer will use only 10% of that specified Pantone color.
So you can create nice hues of the same Pantone Color, costing less
because you use less print cycles. While for 4 color CMYK (Cyan
Magenta Yellow and Black also called full color) print work you need
4 print cycles to build up the same blue.

RGB is not used in print only CMYK. That's why printing an RGB image
looks so awful.

So this why Pantone is easier and cheaper. As far as I know HKS is
mainly used in Germany, Pantone is pretty much the international
standard.

For KDE logo you could if you wanted to use 1 Pantone color and creat
different shades of blue by subtracting color.

Well of my soapbox hope I didn't bore you all to death ;-)
