[Sorry for not replying to Navindra's message. It was downloaded to my other
computer. Apparently KMail timers for pop3 still go off even if it is only
launched with --composer.]
Zack and I have been slowly discussing what to do about the North American
PR situation. We want to organise something semi-formally amongst a few
dedicated volunteers here who are able to travel and speak/exhibit, and who
have the skills needed (technical for talks, people skills for the
exhibitions). We need machines, we need materials, we need people.
I think the first step is to assemble a calendar, perhaps something
collaborative, with all the events we want to target in North America this
year. I am already booked as speaker at two, and I hope to go to at least
one more even if I missed the deadline to speak (OLS).
There is another problem here though. North America is just too large and
we have far too few people. It basically means flying to shows on a regular
basis. Consider Canada, where Vancouver is 3400km away from Toronto. Even
if we have one person close, one person is not enough to run a KDE exhibit.
We need to be able to fly people around, and I doubt that many of us KDE
developers can afford to fly on a regular basis for this. We need financial
support. The KDE League appears to be effectively dead, and I doubt we'll
get much more help from there.
I think it would also be a very good step to setup a CVS module to store
promo materials. This way we will -all- have access to them, they'll all be
in a central place, and we can keep track of the latest changes.
Finally, if you happen to notice a show or conference where you think KDE
should be present, please make sure that you check with people in that region
ASAP! We need to find these things and get registered on time from now on.
This is just a start, but it's as far as I've had time to think so far.
