My solution at this time is to disable nepomuk entirely. I am told that it 
should work better in coming versions of KDE, and I think that is true, there 
have already been quite a few improvements.

With nepomuk disabled, kmail, kaddressbook and korganizer are fast and fine, 
but I lost some features:

* no contact groups
* no autocompletion in kmail composer
* no desktop search
* no using tags/ratings/comments in other kde applications
