Those who prefer plain text already make a decision, one way or the
other.  Those newbies you spoke of will find it incredibly annoying to
be able to read html (default is what they will see as normal) but not
reply in html, so they will be even more unhappy than if we tell them
why we believe html mail is not a good idea.

No, if it's read-only it won't hurt them, but it will annoy them.
Speaking frankly, we don't want to lose loyal users over this.  Recent
experiences have driven too many away already.
