When I do the following in a fresh build dir:
cd kmobiletools
make
...this is what's built:
libkdepim
libakonadi
libakonadiprotocol
akonadi_serializer_sms
...various kmobiletools components from kmobiletools/...
kmobiletools
That looks sane to me. No unwanted dependencies here.
So source-wise kmobiletools should be fine to be built separately.
