I'm not sure we really have to make a difference between "normal" clients and 
other clients or give "filtering" clients a special role. In the end all 
clients are simply reading and/or writing data.

Which clients are notified about which changes is probably a matter of 
configuration. So, KMail would subscribe to the filtered data and the filter 
would subscribe to the raw pop data. But my fancy email debug viewer 
application would still subscribe to the raw data.
