I tired lots of things but eventually used the import process. That meant that 
the kmail.rc file would have been created afresh. I have just had a look and 
nothing seems to be write protected. Also, I could not see anything obvious 
in the kmail.rc file that looked wrong - but then I was not sure what it 
ought to have been looking for.
