I totally agree.

As an aside, I think the space width should be dynamically determined by 
font-width (measured in exes or ems (I never remember which is H and which is 
V); I think 1 ex should be ok). That's important usability- and 
accessibility-wise. (If one can only read comfortably with huge fonts they 
would probably have problems hitting that 5-pixel-wide space.)
